I have always been a storyteller. Most of the writing I have done, whether creative or
journalistic or other(for want of a better word) has ended up like that. I love talking to folk, and I love talking about Shetland. Which is why, when I decided to retire from
public life in 2017, leaving Shetland Islands Council, and a range of public non-
executive roles behind me in 2017:
In 2018 I qualified as a Tourist Guide for the Scottish Tourist Guide
Association (STGA)
I am very glad I did, I never realised how it would grow on me, or what pleasure I
would get taking people to see the wonderful places these islands have to offer, in
terms of history, archaeology and natural beauty. Both the obvious, and the more
obscure. I revel in it, and people who go out with me always seem to enjoy it too
The Scottish Tourist Guides Association are the professional membership body for
fully trained and accredited tourist guides in Scotland. As an STGA guide, I have
successfully completed a rigorous programme of training and assessment before
being admitted to membership of the Association. This training covers knowledge of Shetland’s history, culture, and landscape, but also includes practical training in
professional guiding skills (including group management and safety) and effective
communication.
So who am I making these claims? I am Drew Ratter, made in Shetland, and from many generations of Shetland folk on both sides of my family. Since I began guiding myself, I have always hired guides when I go on holiday, because one thing I learned was how much a good tour guide can enrich the experience. It is like wandering around with an old friend who really knows the place you are visiting, and can tell you things you would never learn any other way.
So get in touch, if you are planning a visit to Shetland. drewratter@icloud.com is the best option. I will then spend a little time finding out any special interests you have, and then tailor a Shetland Experience which I think you will enjoy.
Then if you decide you want to experience it, I will put you in my diary. Simple as that
